SPEAKER • Michael Latawiec,
Michael grew up in inhumane conditions in a Romanian
orphanage until his adoption by American parents. When he
turned 18, guardianship was given to his parents as the only
option to help Michael. He soon started to thrive and with the
help of St. Thomas Law students, was able to have his
guardianship removed. He is now working for Triple Shift
Entertainment promoting Adaptive Bowling. Michael will
share his courageous story that has brought light to Alternatives to Guardianship.

SPEAKER • Marit Peterson,
Marit Peterson, Program Director for the Minnesota Elder Justice
Center will be joining to speak on legal aspects of the Alternatives to
Guardianship. Marit currently serves as the chair of the Minnesota
State Bar Association’s Elder Law Section and is a member of the
Probate and Trust Law Section. She serves on the steering committee
for Minnesota’s Working Interdisciplinary Network of Guardianship
Stakeholders (WINGS) and is an adjunct facility member at Augsburg
University in the Philosophy Department. Marit has provided
numerous local and national trainings on issues affecting older and
vulnerable adults such as safety and autonomy.
