Research on brain development and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has shown strong correlations between how children are treated in their early years and their wellbeing as adults. The ACE study clearly links the maltreatment of children to poor physical and mental health, as well as social – emotional problems in adulthood including: mental illness, suicide attempts, substance abuse, smoking, heart disease, incarceration, unintended pregnancy and workplace problems. ACEs are common, and with nearly 2/3 of Americans having experienced one or more ACEs, chances are you or someone you know is dealing with the effects of ACEs. Although ACEs are a significant social problem, we have the ability to break the ACEs cycle – resilience trumps ACEs! This session will be solution and prevention focused. Examine how to build strengths and resiliency in order to improve the health and wellbeing of all individuals, especially those who have been impacted by ACEs.
